Brian Ibrahim Qamardeen is currently the Principal Software Engineer at Octamile. He has been with Octamile for almost four months now. Third of Eleven children who don’t like sharing memes, we find many interesting things about Brian in this exciting feature.
Briefly introduce yourself. What do you do at Octamile?
My name is Brian. I am the 3rd of 11 children, a little introverted with just a close group of friends. I am an alumnus of the University of Lautech, Ogbomosho. For Octamile, I manage the infrastructure and develop technical systems. By technical systems, I mean those that require scalability, high availability or require a variety of uncommon tools.
How long have you worked with Octamile?
About four months now, I started working with Octamile on November 11th, 2021. Before joining Octamile, I was freelancing and working on my dream projecthe project has not been launched yet, although its launch is close. I look forward to when it launches.
What convinced you to join Octamile?
I already used to work on projects together with the CTO, Dapo. He mentioned an issue Octamile had with a server and asked that I work on it with him (we are cousins). It turned out to be an interesting one. At the end of that project, he mentioned that Octamile was hiring, and I applied. It was a project I already liked, plus it’s a startup – a chance to do great work in a fast-paced environment. Why not?
What’s your day like working with Octamile?
My role doesn’t exactly have a routine. Sometimes, my day starts at 12 am, 9 am, or even 12 noon. Also, some days I am working on infrastructure while on other days I am doing some engineering work. It all depends on the situation.
Favorite thing about working with Octamile so far?
The fact that I am building something new and unique is exciting. I enjoy it a lot, so I don’t have one favourite thing.
If you were not programming, what would you be doing?
I’ll most likely have dabbled into politics. It is something I might consider in future. I can’t say yet.
What fun thing do you like to do?
I read a lot of articles and watch videos about people who are complaining about stuff. I tend to learn a ton of things from articles and videos like this, I also like going to a bar alone. You know, having a drink and watching the activities around, I don’t necessarily have to participate.
One thing people don’t know about you?
A lot of people actually think I have always been introverted. I haven’t always been like that. Also, I don’t have a dream car. If someone asks me what my dream car is, I’ll be blank.
I am scared of large bodies of water and I haven’t learnt how to swim as a result of this.

How would your friends describe you in 3 words?
Crazy, Smart and Reserved
What’s something on your bucket list that you haven’t done before and plan to do this year?
I want to visit a lot of places in Lagos. Especially the LCC (Lekki Conservation Centre). I love nature a lot, and, weirdly, I haven’t been there yet.
What kind of music do you like to listen to, and what are the top 3 songs on your playlists?
I don’t have a genre of music that I like, although I enjoy fast music.
My top three songs will be:
Hell & back – Kid Ink
Westside story – Upper West
Man of the year – Logic
One thing outside work you are excellent at?
Honestly, my work and my pet project are my life. I am not sure about other things I do excellently at this stage.
Share an Image of your favorite meme.
I don’t have a favorite meme. I wouldn’t say I like it.
Ehn?
Yeah, I know. I don’t enjoy exchanging it. I don’t bant a lot, and I don’t even use Twitter that much.
What’s your favourite place in the world?
I have not been outside this country, so I don’t have a favourite place yet. I haven’t seen anything that has blown my mind.
Do you have any phobias?
Yes, I am scared of large bodies of water. I haven’t learnt how to swim as a result of this. Even when I have to use the third mainland bridge, I look away from the water. I am working on this phobia. Hopefully, I will get over it soon.
